Eiger – A
Journey to the Summit (concert/contest)
Grade 3.5 (C.L. Barnhouse Publishers)
Heroic themes abound as noted composer James Swearingen weaves a tapestry
of musical styles to depict the emotional story of John Harlin. At the
age of nine, John lost his father when he tragically fell 4000 ft. to his
death while attempting to climb the mountain known as Eiger (pronounced “eye-ger”). The
Eiger North Face is considered to be the most treacherous climb in all of
Europe. Yet, forty years later John, with a burning desire to reconnect
with his father, began the perilous journey of climbing the mountain with
the nearly impossible goal of reaching the summit. Brilliantly scored,
this new and exciting work is best described as being both stunning and beautifully
breathtaking. Musicians and audiences of all ages will certainly enjoy
being a part of this rewarding musical journey.
Peace

March
of the Belgian Paratroopers (Leemans) (march)
Grade 3 (Hal Leonard)
According to the book March Music Notes, by Norman E. Smith, Pieter
Leemans, while serving in the Belgian army during World War I, was asked by
his regimental commander to compose a march. Several attempts were made,
but he was unable to complete the project. Later, during World War II,
a group of Belgian paratroopers, once again, asked him to write a march. This
time he was able to quickly write a piece that has long been recognized as one
of the great marches of the wind band repertoire. It is both unique in
design and certainly very pleasing to the ear.

Crunch
Time
Grade 2 (C.L. Barnhouse Publishers)
When it’s hip to be cool, this is the piece that both you and
all your students will want to play over and over again. Crunch
Time, with its infectious groove, is the perfect selection for an evening
concert, daytime school assembly, or that occasional athletic pep rally. Your
percussionist will delight in the myriad of sounds required for this work and

from top to bottom. You might just want to consider saving it for the
end of practice so as to insure that your young musicians will be exiting the
rehearsal hall with huge smiles on their faces. A solid candidate for
band favorite!
Crosswinds
March (march)
Grade 1.5 (C.L. Barnhouse Publishers)
Marches have long been established as an “audience favorite” for
people throughout the world. In fact, one noted critic went so far as
to say that no band concert would be complete without at least one march having
been included on the program.
